Have you got an overweight pet, or need some delicious treats to make training more fun? Or do you just want to treat your pet? Our healthy treat recipes are perfect – not only are they delicious, they’re also low in fat, so you can spoil your pet guilt free.

Treats shouldn’t make up more than 10% of your pet’s diet. If you find yourself giving them lots of treats throughout the day, put a bit less in their bowl at meal times to make up for it.

Dried liver

This is really easy to make. It will produce a tasty, low-fat treat that most pets won’t be able to resist.

Method:

1) Take a pig’s liver and cut it into quarters.

2) Place the liver in a foil-lined baking tray and bake at 100°C for 2-3 hours, until dry.

3) Cut the liver into tiny chunks and divide into freezer bags.

4) Put the bags in the freezer and take them out as needed.

Liver biscuits

These make tasty biscuits that will keep for up to a week in an airtight container.

You’ll need:

  • 450g of liver
  • 2 cups of cornflour
  • ¾ cup of semolina
  • 1 egg
  • Milk
  • 2 grated carrots (or a grated apple)
  • 1 clove of garlic

Method:

1) Place the liver in a blender and blend to form a paste.

2) Add the cornflour, semolina, egg, carrot (or apple) and garlic, and mix to form a dough. If the mixture is too dry, add some milk or water.

3) Roll out your dough and cut it into fun shapes.

4) Place your dough shapes on a baking sheet and bake at 180°C for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.

Sardine biscuits

Both cats and dogs will love these biscuits.

You’ll need:

  • 2 tins of sardines in oil
  • 1 crushed garlic clove
  • 300g of oats
  • 60g of whole wheat flour

Method:

1) Using a fork, mash the sardines with the oil in a large mixing bowl.

2) Add the garlic, oats, and flour and mix well.

3) Add enough water to form a dough.

4) Roll the dough out and form into small treat-sized balls.

5) Bake the dough balls at 180°C for 15-20 minutes.

If your dog or cat’s health issue that means they’re fed exclusively on a special diet, this recipe offers an easy alternative to treats. Simply roll your pet’s tinned food into meatballs and freeze on a tray.
