| As with any pet it is essential to follow good hygiene practise to help keep any risk of bacterial and infection under control, for both your cat and your family. These basic steps should help:
- Keep your cat’s sleeping area, blankets, bedding or basket clean, tidy and flea free. Wash bedding regularly. Use a suitable cleaning product, such as Bob Martin Disinfectant to keep any baskets and surfaces clean and free from germs. Whilst our disinfectant is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal, it is perfectly safe for use as directed around pets and their environment. Treat pet blankets regularly with a suitable home flea control product from the Bob Martin range.
- Wash your cat’s feeding and water bowls on a daily basis. Ensure you remove old foodstuffs as soon as your pet has finished feeding, to discourage germs and flies. Bob Martin Disonfectant is safe for use on your pet’s feeding equipment, when used as directed.
- Keeping your cat’s litter tray as fresh and hygienic as possible doesn’t have to be difficult. Bob Martin has a range of cat litters, from Premium Litter Crystals which evaporate the liquid and all odours to natural clumping clay or recycled paper – whichever suits you and your cat's needs. Simply follow the advice on the bag regarding changing litter and cleaning instructions.
- Use a sturdy plastic cat litter tray, placed in a quiet part of the house so your cat feels at ease to use it. Ensure that the tray is kept well away from foodstuffs and food preparation areas. It is not recommended that you keep a cat litter tray in the kitchen as this is not very hygienic. A quiet hallway or corner somewhere, preferably on easy to clean flooring, would be perfect.

Remember, soiled cat litter must never be flushed down the toilet, composted or dug back into the garden as some of the bacteria contained within in it can be harmful to humans. Dispose of soiled cat litter with normal household waste.

- Keep yourself and your family healthy by always washing your hands after dealing with your cat or its equipment, even if you have just been playing with it. Both fleas and worms can be passed from pets to humans.
